Six countries – Germany, Poland and Switzerland – are in competition, along with Mexico, Namibia and the Republic of Korea, to host the Green Climate Fund. This issue should be settled this week, during the meeting of the Board of the Green Climate Fund, held from 18 October in Songdo, South Korea.

The board should also launch the selection process for the executive director of the fund, whose first task will be to head the independent Secretariat that will be established in the course of 2013 and to discuss its progress report to be presented at the next United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP18), on 26 November-7 December in Doha, Qatar.

The Green Climate Fund was established in December 2011 in Durban, South Africa, by the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) with the purpose of helping developing countries shift towards climate-resilient development and put in place the foundations of a low-carbon economy by helping them limit and/or reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impact of climate change.
