Talking Points

  • Two independent studies show the U.S. “10 year time-out” plan for emissions reductions will essentially lock the world into a 2 degree temperature rise.
  • Greenpeace, Oxfam, WWF, and the ITUC call on the U.S. to step aside for the sake of progress at COP17.
  • A report modeling “action now vs. action in 2020” shows a delay with have much higher costs and risks.
  • The U.S. should get back to being a leader, instead of dragging the world into a decade of inaction on climate change which no country can afford.

How Individuals can Take Action

  1. Tweet, Facebook, and Blog this alert.
  2. Sign the AVAAZ petition today so it can be presented to @BarackObama: http://shar.es/o907L
  3. Present the latest evidence (below) supporting urgent climate action.

Our Objective

Put pressure on the U.S. to be a constructive leader at COP17 instead of refusing to take action. This is an official ‘Alert’ and all should respond.

Background

At the COP 17 climate negotiations, the United States is pushing for a “10 year time-out” delaying a binding climate deal to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change until after 2020.

Civil society groups are warning the United States not to drag the world into a decade of unrecoverable inaction. Others are condemning the U.S. plan for contradicting breaking research that supports the need for a binding climate deal now.

This research includes expert studies showing that human activity is responsible at least 75% of global warming, that the world saw the single the largest increases in carbon emissions in 2009, and that delaying action on climate change will increase the cost and difficulty of decarbonizing economies in the future.
